Tax Registration

One question decides everything tax-shaped in RelistKit: are you registered for GST/HST? Most casual sellers are not, and must not charge tax. If you are, you must collect and remit tax for sales that happen outside of resale platforms that collect tax on your behalf.

Before you start

  • Know whether you hold a GST/HST registration.
  • Nothing here changes sales you have already recorded. The settings apply to sales recorded from now on.

If you are not registered

Leave setting in Settings → Sales tax disabled. RelistKit shows nothing tax-shaped except one thing: the registration threshold. Navigate to Reports → GST/HST to see a bar that climbs as your self-collected sales (Facebook Marketplace and cash) add up toward $30,000. That's the point at which the CRA requires you to register for GST/HST.

If you are registered

  1. Navigate to Settings → Sales tax, and then switch on Registered for GST/HST.
  2. Under Province or territory, select yours. This sets the rate.
  3. Under GST/HST number, enter your number.
  4. Tick Also registered for PST or Also registered for QST only if you hold those registrations too.
  5. Under Facebook Marketplace sales, choose whether your price includes tax (typical for cash) or you add tax on top. This decides how RelistKit splits a recorded sale into revenue and tax.
  6. Under Filing period, select yours.
  7. Tick I use the quick method if you do. The filing period and the quick method only shape the report. If you're not sure, check with your accountant.

Every control saves the moment you change it. From then on, every sale you record yourself gets tax stamped from these settings.

Why marketplace sales are different

Since 2022, three platforms are marketplace facilitators in Canada, which means they collect and remit sales tax on every sale themselves, whatever your status:

  • Poshmark
  • eBay
  • Depop

So RelistKit never works out tax on them, and they never count toward your threshold. Only the sales where you collect the money are yours to handle.

Common questions

I registered but my number has not arrived.

Switch Registered for GST/HST on and leave GST/HST number empty. Enter it under Settings → Sales tax when it comes.

I flipped the switch by mistake.

Flip it back. Nothing about past sales changes. Only sales recorded while it was on carry a tax stamp, and you can edit those under Sales → All sales.

Does RelistKit file anything?

No. It gives you the figures for your return, but you file all records with the CRA.
